One of the hardest things to work on is a person’s sibilance. For those who may not know or have forgotten, sibilance is defined as: adjective 1. hissing. 2. Phonetics.characterized by a hissing sound; noting sounds like those spelled with s in this[th is] /ðɪs/, rose [rohz] /roʊz/, pressure [presh-er] /ˈprɛʃ ər/, pleasure [plezh-er] /ˈplɛʒ ər/, and certain similar uses of ch, sh, z, zh, etc. --noun 3. Phonetics.a sibilant consonant. For those of us (like me) who need simplifying, it’s the “S” sound. Now, the reason it’s so hard is because each person’s hiss or sibilant is at a different frequency. To all the engineers, I apologize for the PAIN that comes with controlling it, ESPECIALLY without a DeEsser. For us older folk and even those who may have just been producing for a bit, you know the pain of having to control that STUPID “S” sound with an EQ and nothing else. It was horrible! And I ranted. Sorry. Anyways, if you can get control of it, you can make your vocals sound miraculous. A good DeEsser goes a long way, but if you do t have it…. You can use your EQ to do so. Now it may seem a bit extreme in its use but what you have to do works beat with a parametric EQ that is visually (meaning you can see when what frequency is being hit as a person speaks. For the FL studio users the Parametric EQ 2 plugin will work perfectly. So, here is what you do. FIRST, you need to eq your vocals like you would normally do. If you later your ex’s like I do this will work better. (Your first eq working solely as a high pass filter to cut the low end, the second to boost and manipulate the vocal.) You add.You take 2 of the frequency controls. For FL users I will recommend messing with the 5 and 6 eq frequency controllers. For all other dates, it will be the ones in the 1k and 2k frequencies. The next past seems extreme. You make a box with them and lover them. AS. FAR. AS. POSSIBLE. This is to basically cut out the frequency. You then narrow it down to the specific frequency that soars to high heaven every time you make an “S” or hiss sound. This will work in contrast with the eq you used to manipulate the vocal. You’ll be boosting with one and cutting with the other. Again, this is a poor mans DeEsser. It’s also nice to know if you feel like you need to give the DeEsser a bit of help. This is also not a guaranteed solution, since each persons voice is different and you will need to change it to fit the vocal of the artist singing or rapping. As always take care and stay blessed.
